Winter of 1998+/-, I walked into Bingo's shop in need of a used surfboard, wetsuit, wax... I had been living & surfing on the East Coast after leaving Houston for the military 1972-1980. Bingo & I became friends that day, several times I would surf with him, on one very cold winter session he came out into lineup to surf he did rule the surf that day too. Several years later post hurricane? Bonnie, Karl, Earl whatever... 4 children were caught current next the
jetty, All 4 were hanging onto a boogie board. I was taking a lunch break on the jetty while watching other surfers, the kids came floating by, I heard one say "I'm going to swim back for help". I was shocked into action, screamed at the boy to stay with the others, I would go get help.
At that time Bingo had his surfshop at the jetty park, I ran into the store asked for a surfboard to help the kids. Bingo asked where they were I pointed to the jetty, Bingo and I think his son took to the rescue, With, his Jesus Saves board, & his son with a boogie board & fins, as I ran back to the kids. Bingo & his son paddle through the surf before I could run out to the jetties end. They rescued all 4 kids...That day I declared Bingo Cosby a hero! Then ten+ years later Pastor Bingo married my wife and me on the beach....I will miss that man hugging me and smiling at me everytime I saw him...
It's posted up now surfart.
Thanks for the info....What's URL address for OGSR?
Yes an announcement was made this morning for the paddle out in June on the OGSR site.
I think in death we can overlook the perceived dicotomy of Bingo's personality and focus on the positives-he was pretty souled on the lord and all.... i'm sure he's in heaven....is there gonna be a funeral or paddle out etc.?
Wow! I’m glad to hear some good stuff about him. I never thought he was a bad guy and I never really had any kind of dealings with him other than buying wax and seeing him a few times in the water. I rented a board from him once for a girlfriend of mine back in the day since Breakers had kind of crappy gear. She had a New Mexico Zia on her backpack since she was from there originally. Bingo asked her what tribe she was from and she said Vietnam🤪. To be fair she did look like an Indian though.
