Yes for sure. Its pretty much the perfect day at the Ranch when it is firing. One morning when we arrived at day break in March the light off shores had you reaching for your hoodie. We try to surf during the week when there are just a hand full of surfers in the water and avoid the weekends when more folks show up.
Leon told me that they now have electricity at the few houses near the Ranch but it is still a pretty remote spot. Leon bought property at Saladita years ago and is now in the process of building El Punto (check it out on Facebook. El Punto) which will feature 17 condos and a surf shop. Saladita will continue to grow which is a good/bad thing I guess. The wave is great there but just too crowded from my taste so we drive 20 minutes north to the Ranch.

They had a pretty strong security presence at La Lanca heading in and out on the beach. I spoke with the security guard on the beach and asked him why so much security there. He stated there is a French colony next door that bordered the national park. They were guarding that colony. $$$$$. He said the surf is pretty much the same every day at La Lancha. He went on the tell me about the guy that had a heart attack in the water there last year and died. He then told me about they guy who hit his head on a rock and also died there and the lady that got a large gash on her face and had to be rescued. WTF!!!! All this right before I paddled out. Th local at the surf shop explained it by all the kooks the place attracts. Sure enough I met surfers from London and Germany in the water none of who could surf well. Cowabunga!!

We returned last Saturday, 9/15. It was a great trip and we certainly scored some good surf. We were staying right on a hill on the beach at Anclote and caught some small surf there but missed the best evening because we were eating dinner on the patio at El Senor. We were watching it but the sun was setting and it was too late. The high lights were a boat trip to La Bahia (the cove) and 2 car trips to La Lancha. La Lancha was my favorite at chest/head high and clean. I had my best day Thursday since the Ranch in July 2016. You had to hike 10 minutes through the jungle to get to the beach but it was worth the effort. Leon with www.ixtapasurf.com really hooked us up with every thing since he has friends there.
Punta Mita was dead since it was off season but it made every thing easy for us with breaks that only had a few people out. A friend of Leon's who lives in Salulita picked us up on Thursday and took us to La Lancha and then took us to Salulita to drink and eat and tool around. We all fell in love with Salulita as it had that old Mexico vibe with cobble stone streets and colorful buildings. There were lots of people there even in off season but the break in town was crowded. I can only imagine how crowded it is in the winter month. Perhaps San Pancho might be the call. We didn't hire a photog this trip so no good surf pics but they are etched in my mind. I will try to post up some life style pics later.

Thanks Becka. That is good information. I spoke with Leon via messenger yesterday and he said he has friends in Punta de Mita and they are lining up boards and a boat trip for us. Hopefully with what we save on weekly car rental we can use towards a couple of boat trips and avoid the crowds.

Thanks Becka for the information some of which I have not found in the surf guide to Punta de Mita like the walking distances to El Faro and La Lancha from Anclote. I will be looking for "Some Puncho" and Burros which I have heard about. Depending on the surf we might hire a guide with a boat. John Jones provided me with some good information on Punta de Mita. As you can tell I really dig researching the areas we travel to but no matter how much you do it is never exactly like you expect. Thanks again gentlemen.

We rented a car from national at the airport. You can walk to el faro and la lancha from anclote. You need some good keen like shoes to walk to el faro. It takes about 30 minuets to walk to both of these. I would skip sayulia and hit San pancho. San pancho is a cool little town with a decent break

Hey Becka. Did y'all rent a car in Puerta Vallarta or Punta de Mita? We should be able to walk to town and to Anclote in front of our condo so we will catch a shuttle or cab from the airport. We might rent or hire a driver if we want to go exploring for a day or 2. I would like to check out Salulita too. I was curious what you experience was. I read there are car rentals in Punta Mita but no banks just atms. Did you rent surfboards? We are renting this trip. Thanks for your help.

Very safe in punta mita. My wife and 2 daughters roamed around without issues. like anywhere, don’t get too comfortable of course. We walked all over the town and really didn’t experience anything shady day or night. My 13 year old would already be in the lineup when the rest of us got up. We stayed at la Quinta del sol right in front of stinkys

That is crazy Matt. Seadog rented a new Land Cruiser when we were in Mal Pais 5+ years ago. That was a sweet ride too. The kid Stevn that managed Frank's motel where we stayed took us to an isolated point break call Cabula one day. We got there later than we should have and the tide was dropping. There were 3-4 cars of surfers there but by the time we paddled out they had all left. Our car was the only one on the beach but we could see it from the water. Sure enough someone broke the window out and stole our backpacks. We knew not to leave too much in there but my prescription glasses cost $500.00 so that hurt. Sheet happens right?

Last time I was in Nicaragua I spent a grand on a 4x4 Toyota Prado. They lured me in with a great price, but the insurance, holy shit. It was a pretty sweet ride.

Thanks for the info. Becka, I do appreciate that. Renting cars for a week/10 days like we have done most trips has been expensive in Mexico and Costa Rica the last 3-4 years now that they mandate you have their insurance coverage. They lure you in with a great price on line and then when you pick up the car the price of the insurance is twice the rental price. I think it is a scam. More than likely we will rent one for a day or so to go exploring. Did you feel safe in Punta de Mita Becka? Puerta Vallarta has travel advisories but all the reviews I read for Punta de Mita were positive. We have stayed in Ixtapa 3-4 tmes since 2014 and haven't had any issues but we are low key. I do worry about my 33 year old daughter and friend as they like to stay out at night partying.

My family had a blast staying in Punta de Mita in January. Good surf out front and walking distance to the better points (el faro to the north or la lancha to the south) having a car to explore is always nice, but would have been fine here without it. Be sure to make Teresa’s tacos for the best food in mita and the oasis if you feel like a walk

Thanks gentlemen. Nice to have a surf site where there are always positive vibes. Thanks Matt for making it happen. We head to Punta Mita September 8th for our annual surf adventure. I haven't been there since 1983 when it was pretty much a sleepy little fishing village. Things have changed a lot based on the pics and reports I have seen. We have a suite condo right on the beach at Anclote. The trips where we were able to walk to the break like we had in Nosara, Mal Pais and Nicaragua were priceless and no car rental required except on the days you need one. I hope we score some surf like these pics. Wahoo!

The Ranch is 20 minutes north of Saladita. We drove right up to the break and parked at Julianas. One of my favorite places in the world to surf. We have been lucky here over the years and have never been skunked. It was a secret spot years ago but now you can find it on Surfline. But things have not changed much since those days. It is still very remote. There are a few houses close by but no electricity. They were setting the poles at the time of this trip in July 2016 but things move slow there.
We stay in Ixtapa so it is a 45 minute drive to the Ranch. We arrive by day break because the wind typically kicks in by noon. Breakfast with instant coffee cooked over a wood stove by Juliana after the first session. Fish and shrimp tacos with cold beer for lunch. We head back to Ixtapa by 1:00-2:00 pm for pool time/rum drinks and a massage right on the beach for $10.00 hour. Happy endings are extra. 😎
During a week stay we will surf Playa Linda in town most days and hit the Ranch twice. Its a great break too. If anyone it thinking about going Leon at www.ixtapasurf.com. can hook you up with board rentals/ lessons/ guide service and any thing else you might need. He is a great guy and will turn on to the best Mezcal. Cowabunga!
