I see turtles cruising up and down the jetty in the summer at SS when the waves get flat. They like to eat algae off the rocks. I bet they would dig ship wreck reef algae too. Have you seen the picture of the ship that wrecked in the Florida Panhandle? Holy shit it looked fun!

We pulled 120 cold stunned turtles out of the jetty at Boca Chica last year. Junkman was there. I think I was meant to save critters that day. The surf never got that good.

That dissertation is exactly why we should keep government out of our lives as much as possible. I appreciate the response but the bureaucracy is disheartening. That said, I don't know if we want to further mess with Surfside's Mother (Nature).

Do turtles still nest at Surfside? Doesn’t seem like a prime spot with the minimal sand and car traffic on then beach.

The GLO is really good about responding to inquiries if you email them. Here is the response I received 10/25/17.
Sorry Mike, I thought I had responded to your question, but I'm not sure I did. I remember corresponding with you some back in 2014 and again in 2016 about the Village of Surfside pedestrian beach erosion and maintenance renourishment. When I last wrote to you back in 2016 about the groin system and associated renourishment, a request for amendment to the Village of Surfside's existing US Army Corps of Engineers permit to cover construction of the two groins and associated expanded beach nourishment had been submitted to the Corps-Galveston District at the end of 2015. At that time, we anticipated that the permit amendment would have been issued earlier this year. The amendment request is going through a formal Section 7 consultation with the US Fish & Wildlife Service, which is a lengthy process.
As of mid-September, the engineer and biological permitting sub-consultant working under the GLO-issued work order for this permitting process had reported back to me that the USFWS had provided review comments back to the Galveston District concerning the Biological Assessment (BA) document, which is at the heart of the permit amendment process. The outcome of the formal Section 7 consultation process is that the USFWS and Galveston District will "settle" on special conditions, the BA will be finalized and submitted by the District back to the USFWS who will then issue a Biological Opinion, which in turn will be incorporated into the amended permit by the Galveston District. In terms of moving towards this objective, the Galveston District has asked the engineer to provide responses to the USFWS comments and also to address a question about erosion and longshore transport along Surfside shoreline, which will require a little more engineering modeling effort. As to how long this may take to get to where the Galveston District will issue the amendment, given the post-Harvey all hands on deck mode the District is now in, there is no firm estimate on how long this may take.
As you know, the last maintenance nourishment event was completed on March 13, 2015, along a roughly 2,000 linear-foot long segment of the beach from just west of Texas St. eastward to about half-way between Angel Wing and Crab St. The work was conducted in accordance with the GLO's Beach Monitoring and Maintenance Plan (BMMP) under the state-funded Coastal Erosion Planning and Response Act (CEPRA) program administered by the GLO. Future maintenance renourishment of the pedestrian beach will be driven in part by the recommendations coming out of the next round of BMMP monitoring surveys, which are presently being conducted in part to determine impacts from Hurricane Harvey, as well as available funding, both from the CEPRA program and at the local level. The may be a FEMA Public Assistance program-funded repair opportunity, but it is too early to tell.
Once the permit amendment is issued, work to finalize the design for the groins and associated nourishment and the construction itself would take place under a future state funding biennium, with the assumption that adequate funding for the project is identified, both at the state and local level.
