someone did this back in the el ride days. paddled to Atkinson or the spot off the TC Dike to catch tanker waves. Wavryder wanted to try this with me, and i think in can figure it out using a map, but if anyone has first hand experience i would be much appreciative. definitely bringing my camel back and will probably have to bring a PFD in case the coasties or game warden show up.
we’re shooting for August 7 if anyone wants to try. im just doing it for fun, not my company. insurance would most likely drop my ass if took customers to chase tanker wakes.
Shoot I’m gonna hit you up Jeff. Sounds sick
Ok I’ll holler
Holler. I look for any excuse to launch a boat.
(Eight) two o 5 one six for uno.
yeah the more we talked about it the better a boat seemed
I second taking a boat- my longest bay wave is lil under 5min slide.. yeew
Will do, this week is crazy anyway
Matt let me know if yall really try this i may give it a go on the SUP
Awesome Jeff!!
Morgans point to atkins is shortest and most protected from most wind. But it’s also the narrowest channel = more current and boats. Not idiots like me in boats, but big ass boats. The kind that don’t turn even if they do see you. I don’t know if morgan’s point is public any more either.
All that said, if you go holler. Like I said, I am not well adjusted.
I can at least follow along on your space monkey run in a boat in case you need to abort. Then you can just hop in the boat if it gets shitty.
Yeah I'm not rushing into it and I was really trying to figure out all the variables. I used to paddle at Sylvan and the wind was always howling by 10am. Almost as choppy as the Gulf. I'm not above taking a boat. I paddle all of the time for distance and paddling distance to paddle more for surf sounds tiring as hell. I'll talk to my buddy and see if he'll see the light too.
I don’t see a PM option here so...
Man. I have a boat and have several places marked (no expert, just from being out fishing and seeing it go down my whole life). The bay is my hood. I’d take you out there. Of course I work most weekdays. but I am not working today. The idea of paddling out to atkins or the spots I know of near the dike (along the channel) seems bad to me, and I am not even the most well adjusted.
Sure. You could do it. But there are a lot of dipshits with boats, like me, between you and there. That’s the biggest danger.
And, I paddle in the bay often. The current and just a little bit of wind can make it a real bitch, especially if you are paddling a surf oriented board. And that’s close to land. Currents are much worse out near the channel. Nine days out of ten if you launch from anywhere on the west shore between la port and the dike you are hurling face first into SSE winds that have blown acrosss the biggest part of the bay. It’s way different than east and west bays in that there is little protection from se sse ese e and ne winds.
It’s two miles to the last piece of atkins (the part where you’ve seen videos from), and the spots I know of close to the dike are about 1.5 miles out. All othe places I know of are at least 1.5 out. Maybe closer to the jetties there are spots nearer.
Again, yes it’s probably doable. But be careful, study the weather and maps, and maybe reconsider. In the least, don’t go in all willy nilly.
And, get the navionics ap (The $20.00 one) and a life proof case for your phone. You get reception in most of the bay in case it goes sideways.
I only say all this because I met you once, and you seemed allright.
Pic from a few weeks ago taken on the way home from a morning wade. Which it’s time to do now!
looks like we might get some actual waves next week. Probably putting this on the back burner.
