Carter and I had this conversation a few days ago. We think that all the sand they have dumped in G-town in recent years has been great for the tourist but not for surfers. The thinking is that all that sand has filled in the troughs between the sand bars. I have been surfing G-town since 1965 and the last 10 years since Hurricane Ike have been marginal. Yes there have been some days but not on a regular basis like we use to experience.
G-town has been my primary home break about 28 miles from my house in League City where as SS is 55 miles. The last 10 years I have been going to SS more than G-town but I really dig both breaks. I check the cams every morning and when there is surf SS is typically a foot bigger than G-town. This weekend is a good example. G-town is calling for 2'-3' and SS is calling for 3'-4'. The size difference is expected but the lack of quality surf in G-town on a regular basis is the issue for me.
Your thoughts?
I think it was better back in the day, but still certainly has it's days. Ike jacked the bars up for sure, but it came back around not too long after. the replenishing messes up some spots but makes others better. it is kind of weird the way spots have shifted over the years. for example, look how many people surf at 43rd now, that was purely an overflow spot for decades..
I do most of my surfing on the west end because I can ride my bike. stress level is WAY lower when don't have to worry about gas, parking, tourists, sand in your ride, etc. good thing is, the sand bars have came back some with all the replenishment on the seawall. not so much a destination spot, but can be fun..
